SD Sen. Johnson Retires Citing Health, Age

March 27th, 2013

Entering the auditorium on a motorized scooter and delivering remarks in halting speech, South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson announced Tuesday that he would retire next year at the end of his term and acknowledged he remains limited by a 2006 health crisis that nearly killed him.

Smiling and joking at times as he made the announcement at a press conference in his hometown of Vermillion, the 66-year-old said the effects of his life-threatening brain hemorrhage had made speech and mobility increasingly difficult.

“I feel great, but I must be honest … I appreciate my right arm and right leg aren’t what they used to be, and my speech is not entirely there,” Johnson said, his delivery slurred at-times.

Johnson, who until recently relied on a cane to get around, has become dependent on the motorized scooter he used to enter the auditorium at the University of South Dakota where he made his remarks. He also said he hoped to spend more time with his five grandchildren and that “I think mostly it’s time to go.”

Johnson’s departure helps solidify GOP prospects of claiming the state’s first open Senate seat since 1978. Republican former Gov. Mike Rounds had announced plans last year to challenge Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and has rallied much of the state and national party establishment behind him.

On the Democratic side, long-rumored possible successors including Johnson’s son, South Dakota’s U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, and former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

“I’ve talked to Brendan now and then, but I’m not leaning on him to run or not run,” Johnson told The Associated Press after the event. “I gather he is undecided.”

Brendan Johnson declined to comment on his political plans Tuesday. He has avoided public statements about the race, but has had conversations with party activists in the state, and advisers and potential donors outside South Dakota.

Herseth Sandlin, 42, is general counsel for Raven Industries, Corp., a position she began last year after returning to South Dakota from Washington, D.C. She had worked as a lawyer in Washington after losing re-election to a fourth U.S. House term in 2010.

“While I appreciate the encouragement I’ve received I haven’t focused on the future political opportunities,” she told The AP.

Although both prospects have political networks to tap, both also face potential liabilities.

The younger Johnson, 37, has never held political office and would face questions about his father’s involvement in the confirmation process to his federal post. Herseth Sandlin has taken some positions at odds with some South Dakota Democratic activists, including opposing the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which could hurt in a potential Democratic primary.

Republicans too could face ideological tension.

A Washington, D.C.,-based political action committee released a statement Tuesday criticizing Rounds’ spending during two terms as governor, and calling for a more conservative candidate to run for Johnson’s seat.

U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, elected in 2010, has been courted to challenge Rounds by South Dakota conservatives. While Noem has shown little movement toward investigating a 2014 Senate campaign, aides said Tuesday: “She hasn’t ruled anything in or out.”

Nationally, Republicans said by stepping aside, the politically resilient Johnson, who also retains a $ 1.2 million campaign war chest, gives the GOP its best chance to gain a seat in its quest for the majority.

“I believe South Dakota moves into the top slot as the most likely Republican pickup,” said Greg Strimple, a Republican pollster and past consultant to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Johnson, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, joins Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey as seasoned and influential Democrats departing the chamber, where Republicans need to gain six seats to take control. Two Republican senators have announced their retirements, both in Republican-performing states Georgia and Nebraska.

South Dakota was carried by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney last year, adding urgency for Democrats hoping to keep their majority. Republicans must gain six seats to retake the chamber in 2014.

With his wife Barbara at his side, Sen. Johnson remained standing, leaning on his stronger left hand at the podium, taking questions from reporters then posing for pictures and shaking hands with supporters — reaching out with his left — for an hour.

“I look forward to serving the remaining two years as the country is facing difficult times on many fronts and I will work every day to find a bipartisan solution to these challenges,” he said.

Cyber Wars: Students demand investigation on “American University Pedophile case”

CyberWars:

A couple of days ago we got this article published “The American University’s Impunity for Child Porn” as it seems the article had it effects and the community got awakened. Recently we got an message from Dr. Lori Handrahan. She has been fired and now she and her students are trying to set things right at the American University. Below you can find the message he send us.

Email from Dr. Lori Handrahan: I’m so, so grateful if you are able to publish this in Cyber Warzone. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It would be a huge boost of support for my students. There are now student protests against AU’s Board of Trustees. And this article would go a long way to help the students gain some leverage in their fight for greater transparency and accountable at AU. Of course, it will help me as well and most important—be of huge help to the greater cause/movement. My social media support group of mothers in South Africa, Australia and Norway will get on twitter and facebook and get this spinning the minute it is posted on Cyber WarZone. God bless and so, so many thanks!

Dear American University Deans, I wanted to share “American University’s Impunity for Child Porn” published by Cyber War Zone: http://www.cyberwarzone.com/american-university%E2%80%99s-impunity-child-porn; already mentioned on Comedy Central’s site.

Recently, I was fired, suddenly without cause or due process, just before spring semester. Apparently, my Dean, Jim Goldgeier, was under pressure by Provost Scott Bass. American Association of University Professors has called for my re-statement. I’m being told by that staff and faculty, across the schools, feel “terrorized” by Provost Bass. One faculty member, at AU for decades, said they had never seen faculty so terrorized as now under Scott Bass.

There are rumors of discussions, apparently, of organizing a vote of no confidence for Provost Scott Bass. On the issue of child porn at American University; it hadn’t occurred to me until I was suddenly fired. That child porn is not being downloaded at AU would be statistically improbable if not impossible particularly given AU’s history of protecting pedophiles and leaving them on faculty. I’m asking the FBI and Internet Crimes Against Children Investigators to investigate AU’s servers for child porn. I’m also asking for my job back.

So far, AU has refused to even return my lawyer’s phone calls or letter. I don’t want to sue but I will if AU continues to refuse to even negotiate a settlement. I’m also informing the Board of Trustees, Senator Grassley and Congressman Issa since AU, founded by an Act of Congress, operates under Congressional oversight. Grateful for the support of the Deans at American University. When you are doing all the amazing tweeting pls thank CWZ who was willing to publish the article. www.cyberwarzone.com If you can get Roseanne Barr to tweet and thank them too—that would be awesome. They deserve huge recognition for offering to post this on their site. I’m so grateful to them. Thank you!!!

Fantastic that Waxman hasn’t managed to silence Cyberwarzone (yet). He must be hard at work on it.

Dear Dr. Handrahan: Please find two notices from American University, sent to you by attachment to this email and also by postal mail.

Both notices are effective immediately. https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=f20c4d250d&view=att&th=13d1c4761cfcfbaa&attid=0.1&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P89UhsGMOGVGN_s5zR5p78s&sadet=1362073453619&sads=_1S9ACgm9EmR92OhYwry7HetiRs&sadssc=1

Dr. Lori Handrahan lawyer, I guess they didn’t like the “American University’s Impunity for Child Porn” article up on Cyber War Zone which Roseanne Bar has now re-tweeted more than once on Comedy Central to over 190,000 followers: http://www.cyberwarzone.com/american-university%E2%80%99s-impunity-child-porn

So we are going to leave horrific pedophiles on faculty but call into question my outstanding teaching and service? Bring it on, baby, bring it on. Interesting, they now claim I am not “fired.” Really? I thought my Dean’s email made it pretty clear that I had been fired—didn’t you?

Let’s see you cancel all my classes, screw all my grad students who needed a thesis advisor, and kick me out of my office… but I’m “not fired.” Tenure can and should be revoked for moral turpitude. AU’s former President’s certainly should have been and still should/must have his tenure revoked and be fired for his crimes—even if he bought off a judge so that he served not a day in jail.

That this horrific pedophile remains the NASA representative for AU and after he bragged he had a 4 year old “sex slave” in a cage in his basement over AU’s phones in AU’s offices on AU’s work time while he was jerking off to child porn in his AU office? You have to be @#$ #@$ kidding me. Let’s roll up sleeves and find a lawyer willing to help file a suit against AU. Where is Pacific Justice? Can we not reach out to them again and ask them to help file this suit?

Dr. Lori Handrahan lawyer is a great guy—one of the few protecting me and my daughter. He is my lawyer. The problem is AU and our Provost Scott Bass. Just BBCed you to keep in loop. Essay coming but what AU did yesterday adds more fuel to fire.

The FBI has been busy protecting the pedophiles in Maine and so they are all over me—not helping me but trying to stop me. DOJ called my lawyer and said they had been given orders to silence me because I was creating a hassle for important men in Maine. So I assume FBI is reading all my emails, phone, twitter etc and just waiting to find some small thing that they can put in me in jail for and end this hassle for important rich lawyers in Maine who are destroying our children. They kept coming to campus last fall, waiting outside my classroom just to try and intimate me and silence me.

But I so greatly appreciate the global, powerful advocacy that Anon and Occupy are capable of and do for rape, child porn, pedophiles, child trafficking, and social justice, etc. The power of advocacy you all have created to get global information out there is amazing and I am truly in awe. Without your voice on these issues now—there would be almost total silence—mainstream media has failed all of us so greatly. I may not be able to write an update on what has happened with American University for you now because it might land me in jail and that is what I cannot do. I’m waiting to hear back from my lawyer. I’m never going to be silent about all this but I might have to take a pause for a moment and be strategic so that I can continue to viably fight for my daughter and rescue her. From jail, I won’t be able to do much good for her or anyone. I don’t think American University can put me in jail for publishing the truth—but stranger things are happening in American these days… as Anon/Occupy well knows.

Thank you thank you thank you! Much gratitude! I’ll be back in touch soon with a new essay updating the American University situation—as soon as I can/if/when I can.

Our Gov’t, the Obama Administration and particularly our Dept of Justice appear to be hardly functioning at all. I have had to get very involved with DOJ these past few years-and as far as I can tell no one there does any work at all—except to protect criminals. Again, if not for Anon/Occupy there were be little room for hope today. You guys give me such hope and I’m so grateful for that. My lawyer just called—said I need to take a break from all emails for a while. He is going to work some things and wants me to be silent for a while until we get some leverage.

So I’ll have to wait on the updated essay on AU. Truth to Power and never, ever stop! Thank you, thank you, thank you for fighting the good fight for justice, truth, transparency, accountable for all of us—and most importantly for my daughter so there is hope she will live in a better world. God bless
