Never before have so many Americans been more frustrated with our economic system, more fearful that it is failing, or more open to fresh ideas about a new one. The seeds of a new movement demanding change are forming.

Gar Alperovitz, Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy at the University of Maryland, is cofounder of The Democracy Collaborative. He has served as a legislative director in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and as a special assistant in the Department of State. 10:12AM EST December 9. 2012 – Walgreens wants to reward customers for merely taking a walk, and Rite Aid will help cover trial gym memberships for some of its frequent shoppers.
All the national drugstore chains now offer a free customer loyalty program loaded with incentives to use their cards. Walgreen Co., the nation’s largest drugstore chain, became the latest when it unveiled its Balance Rewards program in September.
Experts say frequent shoppers should consider enrolling but also should be aware that they’re sacrificing some privacy. Here are four questions to consider before a store clerk asks you to sign up during your next visit.
1. Why would I want another card cluttering my key ring?
For starters, there’s a chance to save money or build up points toward a future purchase.
Walgreen’s Balance Rewards program gives customer several ways to add points through both stores and online purchases. Shoppers receive a $ 5 award when they accrue 5,000 points. The reward climbs to $ 50 for 40,000 points.
Rite Aid gives customers a 10-percent discount on store-brand products once they’ve built up 250 points through that company’s Wellness Plus program. That climbs to a 20-percent discount for non-prescription purchases at 1,000 points.
CVS offers through its ExtraCare program 2 percent back on non-prescription purchases and a dollar reward for every two prescriptions purchased.
These programs resemble airline frequent flyer benefits, said Lisa Gill, prescription drugs editor for Consumer Reports.
“If you’re looking to save money, this is absolutely one thing to consider,” she said.
2. What else do these programs provide?
These loyalty programs offer layers of benefits, with some straying beyond the drugstore’s walls to keep you interested. Balance Reward members can earn 10 points for every mile walked thought a “Walk with Walgreens” program.
Rite Aid will cover a two-week trial membership and half the sign-up fee for a Curves membership for Wellness Plus members who accumulate 500 points. Curves is a fitness center chain for women. The drugstore chain also offers screenings or a health magazine subscription for customers who reach that level.
Some companies also offer around-the-clock access to a pharmacist online or through toll-free numbers, and they may provide discounts on treatments for specific conditions like diabetes.
3. What are the drawbacks?
These cards have some limitations. Customers cannot earn points when paying for prescriptions in some states or if they have coverage through government-funded programs like Medicare or Medicaid. Pharmacists are generally experts in their company’s programs, so customers should ask whether they can use loyalty cards when they pay for a prescription.
Some products, such as cigarettes, also are excluded from these programs.
These cards aim to encourage customers to visit more frequently, and those visits can add up. Drugstores are generally more expensive places to shop compared to grocery stores or big retailers like Target, said Jeff Jonas, an analyst who covers the industry for Gabelli & Co.
They can be competitive on items such as baby formula or diapers and convenient if you just need a couple things. But the corner drugstore might not be the best option for the bulk of your weekly groceries.
Customers who sign up for these loyalty cards sacrifice some privacy. The cards give companies a record of your buying habits and shopping patterns. If you have a sensitive purchase for which you’d rather not receive a follow-up marketing e-mail, then don’t use your loyalty card.
“Just remember, these are voluntary, you don’t have to do these, you can still shop at stores without being part of the loyalty program,” Gill of Consumer Reports said.
CVS, Walgreen and Rite Aid all say that they do not sell the data they collect from their loyalty program members.
4. What do the companies get out of all of this?
The cards give companies loads of information to help them drive business to their stores, stock shelves and tailor marketing.
Jonas, an ExtraCare member, receives weekly emails from CVS offering weekend deals. That’s a slower time for drugstores because most customers visit during the week to fill a prescription after seeing their doctor.
ExtraCare data help CVS executives figure out where to place items in its stores and what items to offer, said Rob Price, the company’s chief marketing officer. For instance, if the company sees that its regular customers are buying several bottles of a shampoo at one size, it might start offering a bigger bottle.
CVS has years of data from its loyalty program. It can tell not only what customers are buying, but which ones like sales that feature a percentage off the price and which want deals that advertise the dollar-value discount, Price said.
These loyalty cards also help companies figure out what deals you may like. If you buy a particular nutritional supplement at a store, it may e-mail you a discount offer or promote a sale on a different supplement.
“It’s really an awful lot cheaper for them to basically advertise by sending you an email rather than running a commercial or printing up a circular or putting something in the newspaper,” Jonas said.

Just in time for the holidays, the trend-setting coffee behemoth on Wednesday will be at the forefront of what could be yet another cultural hot button: the super premium gift card. The Starbucks Metal Card isn’t made of plastic, but steel. Each specially etched card, loaded with $ 400, costs $ 50 to make, which Starbucks says explains the $ 450 price tag.
Starbucks will make only 5,000 of them. But you can’t buy them at any Starbucks store. They’ll only be sold via the luxury goods website, Gilt.com. The card comes with gold-level Starbucks card membership benefits, such as gifts and freebie refills on brewed coffee and tea.
“Some stores will never even see this card,” boasts Ryan Records, vice president of card and payments at Starbucks.
But not everyone is impressed. “This is a card for the 1%,” says cultural anthropologist Robbie Blinkoff. “It’s all about status, and to tell you the truth, I don’t know if I’d want to be seen with one of these.”
The move by Starbucks blends two growing trends: consumer love of gift cards and upper-end exclusivity. The costly gift card follows another recent, pricey rollout: a limited brew coffee sold in 46 Starbucks stores, which fetches $ 7 for a 16-ounce cup.
“I won’t be at all surprised to see other retailers follow,” says National Retail Federation vice president of operations Daniel Butler.
Its appeal is exclusivity, says Jason Goldberger, executive vice president at Gilt.com, “When you’re waiting in line at Starbucks, the next person in line won’t have it.”
On Thursday, Starbucks members will have first access to the card on Gilt.com’s website before it’s available to all on Friday, Goldberger says. “We’ve never sold anything like this,” he says. Nor has Starbucks.
For collectors, it could be huge. Some limited-edition Starbucks cards have sold on eBay for thousands of dollars, says Records.
Who will Records buy one for? “I think my Mom is due for one.”

The excitement is palpable in Rhode Island tonight as marriage equality advocates look towards Thursday, when Gov. Lincoln Chafee will sign the marriage equality bill into law.

The governor will sign the bill after the House votes on Thursday to pass the slightly altered version of the bill that the Senate passed last week with a strongly bipartisan, overwhelming majority of 26-12. The House passed the original version of the bill in late January with a 51-19 vote.
Marriages can begin August 1st.
In addition to Rhode Island, marriage equality has been realized in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Washington, Maryland, Maine, as well as in the District of Columbia and 3 tribal jurisdictions.

Legislation that would empower states to tax online purchases cleared a key hurdle in the Senate on Monday after winning an enthusiastic endorsement from President Obama.
Senators advanced the bill in 74-20 procedural vote on Monday evening, just one vote short of the backing it received in a test vote last month. Twenty-six Republicans joined Democrats in moving forward with the bill.
The Senate will now begin debate on amendments. The chamber is expected to hold the decisive vote on the bill — known as the Marketplace Fairness Act — later this week.
The economy will be unable to grow substantially in the coming months, thanks to the tax hikes approved in January and the automatic spending cuts set to begin Friday, says Elliott Gue, editor of the StreetAuthority newsletters High-Yield International and Top 10 Stocks.
“We’re going to skirt recession, but what we’re going to see is basically what we’ve been seeing ever since the end of the financial crisis, which is just very slow growth, very slow improvement,” he tells Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview.
Gross domestic product will likely expand 1 to 1.5 percent in the first half of the year, Gue says. And you can blame fiscal policy for the weakness.

“Though Republicans and Democrats did come together and sort out a deal to avert some of the fiscal cliff at the beginning of the year, the reality is that taxes in particular went up on about 77 percent of U.S. households,” thanks to the payroll tax increase, he explains.
“We’re already seeing evidence that that’s starting to hit in the actual economic data and in corporate earnings results.” For example, Wal-Mart Stores reported a weak first-quarter outlook last week.
“So we’re already starting to see the effect of taxes and higher payroll taxes on consumer spending,” Gue adds.
As for the sequester, which totals $ 85 billion through the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, “in and of itself, [that] is not enough to have a humongous impact on the U.S. economy,” he says. But when you also take into account the payroll tax increase and the tax hike on the wealthy that resulted from the fiscal cliff compromise, “the combination is pretty sinister.”
On the subject of Federal Reserve policy, “it’s a little bit too early to call the end of quantitative easing,” he says. The Fed has added more than $ 2 trillion to its balance sheet through quantitative easing in the past five years.
While some of the central bank’s hawks would like to see quantitative easing curtailed, “the reality is that the main voting members of the Fed are not going to be willing to end quantitative easing until there are real signs of economic growth,” Gue says. “It’s unrealistic to think that the Fed is going to make major changes to its quantitative easing program until sometime in the middle of 2014.”
The sluggish economy will likely enforce its will on the soaring stock market, Gue says. “We’re likely to see a pretty significant correction … for some of the reasons we just talked about — the sequester and fiscal consolidation.”
But that doesn’t mean an end to the bull market that began in 2009 and has pushed stocks close to record highs, he adds. “One of the factors that’s really helping us is strong growth outside of the United States. In particular, we’ll see a pickup in the Chinese economy this year.”
Just last week we reported that the witch hunt for occupy wall street supporters on the west coast has expanded, leading to imprisonment without trial for four different activists, three of them remaining behind bars.
Now another activist has been hit with a subpoena, and like the others she is refusing to cooperate, but she is also refusing to even enter the court room.
It is important to mention that none of these people were even in town at the time the alleged acts of vandalism occurred.
“Three anarchists are in jail in Seattle for refusing to talk about their politics and other activists before a federal grand jury, and prosecutors have shown no signs of letting up. Another anarchist has now come forward about receiving a subpoena, and has refused to cooperate in any way — even entering the courtroom.
Portland anarchist Kerry Cunneen received a grand jury subpoena on December 14th, according to a statement published by the Committee Against Political Repression. The date was pushed back until January 3rd, but Cunneen refused to enter the courthouse.
“I will not cooperate with this grand jury nor will I in any way aid the state in its efforts to imprison people,” Cunneen said in a statement.
The grand jury appears to be investigating May Day vandalism at the Nakamura Federal courthouse in Seattle. Cunneen and the other grand jury resisters are not accused of those crimes, but were subpoenaed to the grand jury to answer questions about their political associations, their politics, and their friends.
Matt Duran, Katherine Olejnik, and Maddy Pfeiffer all refused to answer any questions during the grand jury hearing, saying it was a political witch hunt against anarchists because of their political beliefs. They are all in jail in Seattle, where they may remain for the full term of the grand jury. Cunneen risks similar jail time for taking a principled stand against cooperation.”
“I have been subpoenaed to the grand jury in Seattle investigating Anarchists in the Pacific Northwest. I was called to testify on January 3rd at 9am. I did not appear before the grand jury. I will not cooperate with this grand jury nor will I in any way aid the state in its efforts to imprison people.
I stand firmly in solidarity with the actions taken against the Nakamura Federal court house during the May Day demonstration and all action taken against the state and capital towards the goal of a more liberated society. I am in solidarity with the May Day 5, with Maddy, Matt and Kteeo, and everyone else who has met repression with resilience. To all whose solidarity has come in some form of action, it is inspiring and must continue.”
I have many strategical and philosophical differences from this sect of occupy wall street, specifically in the realm of private property rights, which i believe is the cornerstone of any free society. However, that is not important, injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere. The state always picks away at the fringes of society until there is no one left, as the old poem by Martin Niemöller once described:
First they came for the communists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the socialists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the jews, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the catholics, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a catholic.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
Unfortunately, i have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of this witch hunt…
